A Field Observer’s Handbook of Preternatural Entities and Beings from Beyond The Wall of Sleep!
Chaosium Unveiled: Inside Petersen's Field Guide to Lovecraftian Horrors
Weird shapes in the park? Odd rumbling noises in the basement? A lurking dread in the kitchen? Bad dreams involving strange adventures and bizarre creatures?
Identifying the lurking horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos is never an easy task, so researchers need all the help they can get—don’t leave home without the Field Guide!
Penned by Sandy Petersen, the creator of the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game, Petersen’s Field Guide to Lovecraftian Horrors is the essential spotter’s guide for the budding and experienced preternaturalist.
Over 50 beasts of the Cthulhu Mythos are detailed and categorized with background information, size comparison charts, habitat and lifestyle notes, and much more. Each entry is accompanied by a full-colour illustration of the dreaded entity.
Petersen’s Field Guide To Lovecraftian Horrors is completely rules-free. You can use it to inspire your own Call of Cthulhu (or RuneQuest or 7th Sea!) scenarios, or the book itself can be used as an in-game prop—a tome of forbidden knowledge!

"A lovely hardback… full colour, muscular and imposing, weird and unearthly, strange and shocking. …attractive to own, sometimes to peruse, sometimes to show off, sometimes to inspire."

"There are Cthulhu Mythos monster books aplenty, but Petersen’s Field Guide stands out."
— Graeme Davis, My Top Five RPG Monster Books.

I bought this book for the art only, to have images of some of the Mythos that doesn't exist anywhere else on the internet but in this PDF. I can without problems say that the art was worth the price alone. In this book are also a page worth of Habitats, what the mythos eat/if they eat and a physical description of each creature within the book. It's not a must have, but it's a very good book for people who appreciate the art and some light lorebits of the mythos in this setting. Loïe Muzy, Mariusz Gandzel and Claire Delépée have managed to paint art of IMPOSSIBLE CREATURES and did a more then well done job, fantastic!
When I first started reading it I was very impressed by the illustrations and narratives accompanying them. I finished the book in a few hours but by the end I realized some things were missing. First and most prominent: Cthulhu is NOT in the book! I have no idea why but this feels like a serious oversight. A few other deities such as Hydra and Dagon are also missing and and quite a few others. Overall this book is alright and the effort is commendable but missing such important figures is REALLY disappointing.
