What The Critics Say

  • "For Call of Cthulhu fans, this is a strong addition to the game’s product line and will be a welcome addition to a collection... Of particular note is how well conceived the mission is. All of the different actors have clearly defined objectives. The investigators themselves, obviously, but also the antagonists and NPCs. Putting it all together makes the story work seamlessly as it’s easy to understand how all of the different parts are supposed to be working in concert."

    — British Fantasy Society, Call of Cthulhu: A Time to Harvest. RPG Review.

  • "A Time to Harvest is a fantastic campaign book. I absolutely love that we finally have a campaign that is squarely in Lovecraft Country alone, and the atmosphere of this location is fantastic... This is an easy recommend to Keepers looking for a new experience to bring to their playgroups. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!"

    — EuroCultAV, Tabletop Review – A Time to Harvest/Cults of Cthulhu – Chaosium.

  • "I do really dig this tale set in the backwoods of Vermont – 9 out of 10."

    — The Gaming Gang, Call of Cthulhu: A Time to Harvest.

  • "There are 370 pages in Cults of Cthulhu and the detail and information packed into them really is extraordinary... There is absolutely no question in my mind that Cults of Cthulhu is an essential addition to any Call of Cthulhu Keeper or Investigator’s bookshelf, as well as that of anyone with an interest in the Cthulhu Mythos generally. Get a copy as soon as you can."

    — GameOnAUS, A Cult Above - Cults of Cthulhu RPG Sourcebook Reviewed.

  • "This is a very impressive book, and you will certainly get value for money."

    — M.T. Black, Twitter Review.

  • "A surprisingly detailed sourcebook to the point where its appeal goes beyond the RPG elements and it would be interesting reading for any fan of the Cthulhu Mythos—making it an appealing gift for the Lovecraftian Horror fan in your life."

    — Royce Wilson, The GOA 2021 Table-Top RPG Gift Guide.

  • "A compendious and superlatively produced supplement for Call of Cthulhu, devoted to the cults devoting themselves and their sanity to Big Squidface, across the ages and the continents. If there's one book needed for Keepers to put awe and terror back into their Cthulhu-focused campaigns, it's this one... [a] fabulous piece of work that belongs on the shelf of every CoC gamer, and probably a great many others besides - it's that useful, and that good."

    — Paul StJohn Mackintosh, RPGNet, Review of Cults of Cthulhu.

  • "An important part of the Cthulhu Mythos mystery ecology... a fantastic book for Keepers"

    — Charles Dunwoody, EN World, A Review of Cults of Cthulhu.

Should be 5 stars, but that file size...

Posted by Brian Sandall on 10th Nov 2022

Beautiful PDF that clocks in at 118 MB for 370 pages. Compare that to the 449-page Keeper Rulebook that can be had for only 27.1 MB and you see my main complaint - this goes for all of the extras, too, like the 18 page keeper maps that for some reason is 76.4 MB. Other than that, very happy with this product.

Ring Side Report- Cults of Cthulhu

Posted by Edward on 8th Nov 2022

Product- Cults of Cthulhu System- Call of Cthulhu 7th Ed Producer- Chaosium Price- $25 here https://www.chaosium.com/cults-of-cthulhu-pdf/ TL; DR- Solid Book of bad guys, set ups, and tools 100% Basics- Ia! Ia! Cults of Cthulhu gives you… exactly what it says! This book is a book of four different cults, adventures to go against each cult, and tools to build your own cthulhu cult. Mechanics or Crunch- This book is VERY much a Keeper’s book and not a players’ book, and that's ok. This book has new monsters and stats for them, variant spells, and tips for building your own cult. I am honestly impressed by the depth of ideas for building a cult. I play too many fantasy games where the idea of how a cult is financed doesn't come up. But here, how the money happens is a very important way to build your cult. Even optional crunch for Pulp Cthulhu is presented! Players will find nothing in this book, but Call of Cthulhu doesn't really ever give players much more beyond the basic investigator book. The crunch doesn't disappoint in this one. 5/5 Theme or Fluff- Again, this is a Keeper book, but built in a fun, informative way to help the Keeper build a world. Each of the four presented cults have real depth and personality with individual people and their goals presented. My one minor negative is like most Cthulhu books, you really only get the 1920s as a playground. It’s the most popular time for Call of Cthulhu, so I understand why, but I do seriously appreciate the one modern cult that is presented here. Also, adventures! There are four adventures against these four cults. So even if you need a one shot, this book has you covered. 5/5 Execution- I don’t think Chaosium has ever disappointed me. Hyperlinks, solid handouts, easy reading, separate files, pictures of monsters, and everything else makes this the whole nine yards. Its 25 bucks as a PDF, which is a decent chunk for a PDF, but even if you just used this for four one-shots, that brings the price down to manageable levels of any other market adventure for CoC. And it seems that Chaosium is listening and , while I love them, the handwritten notes are hard to read, Chaosium is making just nice plain text ones as well. My one complaint is I want pregens for each of the adventures, but that is just begging for more on an already solid product. 5/5 Summary- Cthulhu is gonna be the main draw for a game called Call of Cthulhu, so why not have some humans doing bad things for him? This book is a solid resource that, even if I just wanted some quick adventures and handouts, is well worth the price of admission. If you want to build your own cults, then this is the book you might want to check out as well. NOW DO YOG! 100%

Cults of Cthulhu for CoC 7E

Posted by Shane Bauer on 23rd Mar 2022

This is a terrific CoC supplement, one of the best last year. One thing that's always been missing from the game was, "What do all these cults do when they're not getting shot at by the Investigators?" Asked and answered! I can't recommend it highly enough and can't wait until the print version is out.

    Superbly done work.

Posted by Scott Edward Nash on 13th Mar 2022

I was not sure if this book would be helpful to me, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the content and quality of the information that was put into it. It is a very interesting read and well thought out. I am now anxiously awaiting the physical copy to be available. If you have any interest at all in exploring the ideas and structures of cults or want to create your own - this is the book for you. Really well done and a great example of the love Chaosium has for the Cthulhu mythos.
