What The Critics Say
"Without doubt, the definitive Call of Cthulhu monster guide... a full-color feast for the eyes and the absolutely essential compendium of Lovecraftian deities and denizens."
— Andrew Logan Montgomery, Exploring the Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic, and Gaming.
"Looking back over twenty-five years of monster volumes for Call of Cthulhu, it's obvious that Chaosium's new two-volume Malleus Monstrorum is not just the best, but miles ahead of its predecessors. It's beautifully designed, gorgeously illustrated, and stunningly complete."
— Shannon Appelcline, RPGNet Review.
"An important entry in the 7th Edition library... the breadth of the project is authoritative and all-inclusive. If I have a question about a Cthulhu Mythos monster this is probably the first place I'm going to go to now."
— Dave Thaumavore, YouTube Review.
"Jaw-dropping... its exquisite art and its refined text make it one of the most striking publications of the current edition. Alongside The Grand Grimoire of Cthulhu Mythos Magic, it will be part of the wish list of all fans of the system."
— Donjon Master, (review is in Portuguese)..
"The Malleus Monstrorum goes deep into the creation of a monster as an experience rather than a known thing... This is an excellent resource for those who want more out of the beasties in their game, or want to take a shot at creating their own cosmic horrors. All in all, Malleus Monstrorum sets an excellent standard for RPG bestiary collections, both now and in the future."
— Never Read the Latin, Bestiary Review.
"9/10 - Malleus Monstorum is an absolute gem... Chaosium delivers a jam-packed two volume reference that blends flavor and mechanics to offer Keepers a detailed accounting of Mythos-based threats."
— The Gaming Gang, A Monstrous Manual Reviewed.
"Five out of five eldritch tentacles – I think the slipcase is worth it just for the first book of monsters alone. What a horrifying and terrifying collection to rend investigators with and threaten to eat the heads of heroes."
— Charles Dunwoody, ENWorld, Malleus Monstrorum Unboxing.

The definitive bestiary for Call of Cthulhu
An superb two volume set that expands on the lore of the various Mythos creatures and gods (including possible "blessings" for characters who worship the Great Old Ones, Outer Gods, and Elder Gods). Was expecting some more artwork, but some the of the descriptions for the monsters are simplistic (such as blobs, formless entities, and regular animals corrupted in some way), so I can't in good conscious take away points for that. Pick up a copy to enhance your CoC campaigns or adventures.
High Quality Production and Content
The Slipcase set is really, really nice. The case itself is thick and sturdy, the books are high quality and each has a ribbon bookmark. The content is where it really shines though, very thorough background information and ideas how to use the Deities and minions in your campaigns. The amount effort to create these manuals must have been a labor of love. There is so much information it is really amazing. Well worth the cost and probably worth more than the asking price. Very happy with my purchase.
Content invaluable, would benefit from more art
First of all: it's a great product and any Keeper who wants to come up with their own scenarios and adventures basically needs this. It's not so much about the stats but about the cults, the history and the detailed descriptions. It would be a 5+ star product if it just had more art work. I'm not expecting every single creature to be visualized, but there are many pages with barely anything except text. It's invaluable for its content, more art would make it perfect.
This is a lovely product. Chaosium's physical products are superior to every other company in the industry. Their books are solidly bound, the pages are heavy and pleasant to the touch, and the writing and artwork are excellent. The slipcase is collector's-item quality. I don't even have anyone to run a CoC game for, but I am glad to have this thing just as a collector and lover of RPGs.
Ready for a part 2!
This book is fantastic! Contains plenty of monsters with detailed descriptions and amazing artwork. I hope the same effort goes into a book detailing monsters of the dreamlands.
Great Reference Book - not enough pictures
The books have chock-full of information. Vol 1 is on creatures. Vol 2 is on each Mythos Deity and their cults, a gold mine of info. The only drawback is most Monster Manuals have an illustration for each creature. This is not the case for this set of books. I'd say 1/3 to 1/2 of the entries have illustrations and most are in sepia tones, not full color. Some of the well-known creatures don't have illustrations and some illustrated in the Keeper Rulebook are not illustrated in this set. Even though the horror should be left to the imagination of Players, as a GM, I'd like an illustration to help me, so I can pick a detail that I can focus on or give as a hint. Some entries are not quite alphabetical, but based on their place of origin, for example: "Tindalos, Hounds of" or "Shub-Niggurath, Dark Young of." Overall, a great set of books in a handsome slipcase.
I've said for years that Chaosium will sell you more game, more supplement, and more adventure for your money than anyone in the industry. This slipcase set keeps up the tradition. No effort has been spared and no corners have been cut. Beautiful, vividly imagined artwork combines with a wealth on detail on the creatures and deities of the Mythos all geared to the latest edition of COC. These books are value for the money, but be warned that in addition to the sticker price, you may be out some sanity points. This set ranks among the best of the best in Call Of Cthulu. Highly recommended.
After perusing the PDF version for months all I can say is yes, get the print version. In the long history of bestiaries and "god books" for RPGs this is by far the best. A must for any Keeper.
