What The Critics Say

  • "There are 370 pages in Cults of Cthulhu and the detail and information packed into them really is extraordinary... There is absolutely no question in my mind that Cults of Cthulhu is an essential addition to any Call of Cthulhu Keeper or Investigator’s bookshelf, as well as that of anyone with an interest in the Cthulhu Mythos generally. Get a copy as soon as you can."

    — GameOnAUS, A Cult Above - Cults of Cthulhu RPG Sourcebook Reviewed.

  • "This is a very impressive book, and you will certainly get value for money."

    — M.T. Black, Twitter Review.

  • "A surprisingly detailed sourcebook to the point where its appeal goes beyond the RPG elements and it would be interesting reading for any fan of the Cthulhu Mythos—making it an appealing gift for the Lovecraftian Horror fan in your life."

    — Royce Wilson, The GOA 2021 Table-Top RPG Gift Guide.

  • "A compendious and superlatively produced supplement for Call of Cthulhu, devoted to the cults devoting themselves and their sanity to Big Squidface, across the ages and the continents. If there's one book needed for Keepers to put awe and terror back into their Cthulhu-focused campaigns, it's this one... [a] fabulous piece of work that belongs on the shelf of every CoC gamer, and probably a great many others besides - it's that useful, and that good."

    — Paul StJohn Mackintosh, RPGNet, Review of Cults of Cthulhu.

  • "An important part of the Cthulhu Mythos mystery ecology... a fantastic book for Keepers"

    — Charles Dunwoody, EN World, A Review of Cults of Cthulhu.

  • "A robust book that offers a lot for the gaming table."

    — British Fantasy Society, Cults of Cthulhu by Chaosium. RPG review.

  • "An excellent supplement for those looking to dive into the history of the cult and includes three very solid adventures focusing on a trio of very different groups of worshipers of the Great Old One."

    — The Gaming Gang, Cults of Cthulhu Reviewed.

  • "One of the most substantive supplements released for the game"

    — Refereeing & Reflection, Call of the Cults.

  • "Cults of Cthulhu takes the Keeper back to Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu to look at some of the roleplaying game’s fundamentals and inspirations with fresh eyes. The result is an excellent examination of both cults and Cthulhu, supporting the Keeper with advice and the means to create her own cults and cultists, as well as backing everything up with examples and scenarios."

    — Reviews from R'lyeh, Faiths of Fear.

  • "Cthulhu is gonna be the main draw for a game called Call of "Cthulhu, so why not have some humans doing bad things for him? This book is a solid resource that, even if I just wanted some quick adventures and handouts, is well worth the price of admission. 100%."

    — Edward Alan Kabara, RPGNet Review of Cults of Cthulhu.

  • "Cults of Cthulhu is a book I didn’t know I wanted or even needed, but now that I’ve had it in my possession, and read it, I don’t think I’ll ever let it go. Cults of Cthulhu is one of the most entertaining RPG sourcebooks I’ve ever read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!"

    — EuroCultAV, Tabletop Review – A Time to Harvest/Cults of Cthulhu – Chaosium.

  • "One of the most important books any game master can have for any system they are running."

    — Game On!, Every Game Master NEEDS This Book - Cults Of Cthulhu (Youtube).

  • “Really impressed by the quality, imagination, and thoughtfulness of this supplement... My only real complaint is that it has taken 40 years for Chaosium to start putting out this kind of book."

    — Taskerland, REVIEW: Cults of Cthulhu.

  • “Cults of Cthulhu is a well-crafted, thoughtful, and very useful guide to adding Cthulhu cults to your games."

    — Fantasy Faction, CULTS OF CTHULHU: A SOURCEBOOK FOR THE CALL OF CTHULHU RPG.

  • "Any Cthulhu fan would have to be crazy not to get it... Let’s face it; cults are fun, and whether yours worships The Goat with a Thousand Young, The Crawling Chaos, or He who Shall not be Named, this book contains the means to make it realistic, dynamic and memorable. Recommended.”

Cults of Cthulhu is a winner.

Having read other reviews I knew this would be good, and I was not disappointed. Another EXCELLENT sourcebook for my library. Superb artwork, over 360 pages of content on cults, cultists, history, and how to work up your own believable cult to unleash on your Investigators. Highly recommended. ❤️❤️

    Outstanding

Posted by Ruggero C on 21st Dec 2023

"Cults of Cthulhu" is a book that exceeded my expectations, and profoundly changed the way that I construct my scenarios for Call of Cthulhu. The scenarios contained in the book are intricate and complex to run, but are very rewarding for the Keepers who want to dive deep into roleplaying complex NPCs who have intricate relationships to other characters and have elaborate agendas. This book is very helpful for creating new scenarios, as it both provides tons of inspiration for creating adventures based on the cults described in the book, and also gives clear and practical guidelines for those who want to create a cult of their own. While I agree that the book is narrowly focused on the Cthulhu cult, I see no difficulty in using all the material and transposing it to the cult of another Great Old One or Deity. Outstanding.

    Narrow in Scope

Posted by Mitchell Vazquez on 17th Jan 2023

Great book, but heavily focused on cults worshipping Cthulhu; I would have preferred something a bit broader in scope, but the depth is impressive. That said, its advice and mechanics for creating interesting cults and their leaders can be applied to any deity's worshippers, especially when combined with information from Malleus Monstorum.
