What The Critics Say

  • "There is a line on the dust jacket of the Guide to Glorantha that reads; ‘Glorantha is the technicolor cure for bland, pseudo-medieval generic fantasy.’  Normally when you read something like this, you can be forgiven for thinking it is self-aggrandizing, pretentious crap.  Not in this case.  If you have any doubts, all you need do is look at exhibit A, The Smoking Ruin & Other Stories.  Seriously.  You can open to any random page and find proof that--yes Toto--you aren't in Thedas, or Middle-earth, or Faerûn any more."

    — Andrew Logan Montgomery, Exploring the Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic, and Gaming.

  • "Buy, prepare, and play immediately; do not let it linger on your bookshelf... Both setting and system deliver on everything they promised. The backstories go deep into the core of the adventures, the challenges are unique, the flavour is one-of-a-kind, the colours are vibrant, and the smells are breathtaking."

    — Antonios S., RPGNet Review.

  • "The wait has definitely been worth it. The three scenarios it contains are all begging to be played..."

    — Reviews from R'lyeh, Review - Smoking Ruin and Other Stories.

  • "The Smoking Ruin is fantastic and a prime example of why RuneQuest is such a special roleplaying game - 8.5/10."

    A great romp!

Posted by Curtis Lyons on 14th Jan 2021

I really enjoyed these adventures. They can be used either as they are or have lots of ideas that any GM could adapt for their game. Perfect for those less than fully creative moments! :)

    Really engaging scenarios

I want to update my rating now that I have the actual book in my hands (as opposed to reading the pdf). It is another beautiful volume and an invaluable addition to my Runequest collection. Very impressed.

The Smocking Ruins - A GM review

Posted by Manuel MOLINIER on 19th Aug 2020

The smocking ruin... is an impressive sandbox setting full of wonderful places and people, lot of people, and ripe with adventures. It is a great continuation on the GM Pack adventures and just the "title" adventure will provide many sessions of fun, political intrigue, investigation, and ruins exploration done right. And singing and dancing. One of the best campaign settings I read.

    The Smoking Ruins

A top-drawer scenario book. Production values and editing are impeccable. NPCs are thoughtfully described—there are no simple good guys and bad guys here. And it’s showing us new parts of Glorantha!

    Smoking Ruin Review

Posted by James Mozley on 18th Aug 2020

The thing being done well in the new set of RQG supplements is the creativity and exploration of Gloranthan places, people and themes. The Smoking Ruins is a great example of this. The background information on the area and peoples is welcome. The Wild Temple is a good background GM resource. I’ve run an adventure here where the players needed the Shaman’s help to capture a spirit for them. There are some good NPCs to build on and use, as well as the details of the place itself. The Smoking Ruins is a great scenario, where the interaction is not all combat. It details one of the ruins that has always been on Runequest maps, but until now has remained unexplored. As it stands it is presented as a more entry level scenario, which fits in with the GM adventures from the RQG screen pack . However, it could easily be adapted to a more powerful group who need to retrieve a powerful relic (I’m avoiding spoilers). There is some duplication of the NPCs presented between the Smoking Ruins and the GM adventures, but this does mean that you don’t need to own that to run the scenario. My minor gripe with the scenario is that while the map looks nice, having the 3D picture with a 2D map (with a scale!) would have been better. The descriptions of the ways into the ruins and the map don’t all seem to be quite in step, and could certainly be clearer. Having a more detailed map could also help with expansion and re-usability, while the 3D picture reflects the situation when the party reaches the ruins. That said, this is a minor gripe compared to the great creativity in presenting a piece of Gloranthan history. Like all large published scenarios it will take some preparation to use, because of the options available to players, but options are a good thing. The Lost Valley and Urvantan’s Tower present an out of the way area that needs defending. This fits in with recent events in the world (as presented in the RQG rules and Glorantha sourcebook) as well as the area it is in. Again there is a bit about Glorantha here that is new in some of the NPCs (I’m avoiding spoilers). The last scenario, The Grove of Green Rock, will fit in almost anywhere as a recurring theme. One thing I have noticed with the new supplements is that sometimes the content itself can contain a number of errors when first released. It is good that these have been addressed in the printed release. I’m not always a fan of some of the map art, which can be “pretty” at the expense of clarity. I would rather have the creativity and new discoveries about Glorantha though, I can always fix stat blocks for instance. If the test of a supplement is about how much I’ll use it, then this is a 5-star group of scenarios as I’ll be running them all, some of them with more than one group.

The 3 adventures in this book are fantastic as well as in depth locations. Really love the stuff about the Wild Temple
