What The Critics Say
"STYLE: 5. The revitalized Chaosium has been putting out some dazzling books, and this one is no exception - especially with the vivid and loving renditions of the various beasties and beings. SUBSTANCE: 5. Not just a compendium of creatures, but an indispensable companion, steeped in Gloranthan lore and thoroughly inspirational.
— Paul StJohn Mackintosh, RPGNet Review - RQ Bestiary.
"The Bestiary is a treasure, a masterfully illustrated and produced tome that far and away surpasses any other monster guides we have seen for Glorantha… the most definitive and comprehensive look yet at Glorantha’s non-human cast of characters to date."
— Andrew Logan Montgomery, Exploring the Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic, and Gaming.
"The RuneQuest: Glorantha Bestiary opens up the world of Glorantha and Dragon Pass... Its combination of background and stats, friends and foes, supports Game Master and player alike and together serve to make (it) an essential companion to RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha."
— Reviews from R’lyeh, Gloranthan Friends and Foes.
"I love [the Glorantha Bestiary's] selection of monsters. Many of them are super weird (Walktapus! Jackobears!), but they all feel like they have a place in the larger mythological ecosystem. Even conventional monsters seem fresh and exciting (see that Babylonian gargoyle). And there is something about the bronze age trappings of the world that makes things like giant bugs and dinosaurs super compelling (compared to D&D, where they get outshined by more exotic critters)."

"A must for playing games in Glorantha… The interior art is as awesome as the cover. …It is no wonder that this book, together with the two others in the RQ slipcase, won an ENnie award for Best Interior Art in 2019."
— Runeblogger, RPGNet review.
"The RuneQuest Glorantha Bestiary is not just a monstrous compendium, but a well-written tome about the things that live and breathe in Genertela. It does not restrict itself to the monsters-as-NPCs concept and provides something that few books of this type do: a vibe, a feeling about how the world of Glorantha functions."
— Antonios S., RPGNet review.

Unless you want to only use human opponents or are just going to convert from previous versions, this is absolutely essential. It is very well put together and organized with fabulous art that can help new players visualize that these aren't their father's elves and trolls! I recommend buying it as part of the boxed set, but if that ship has sailed then pick it up by its lonesome!
Literally my only complaint about this book is there is not enough of it. I want more of the fabulous chunks of lore embedded in it, I want more of the freaky angles on names I thought I knew, and I want more things that are entirely and utterly unique and strange. An entire book on each of the chapters would be fine, and I'd buy them all.
I was a bit doubtful about the need to publish another Bestiary. But this is a very useful book which really brings Glorantha to life. Highly recommended
The subject line is a bit of a joke, but I am making it to draw attention to the sheer level of detail that went into bringing the fantastical world of Glorantha to life. This book actually does have full distribution maps to show how the creatures contained within interact with and play a part in the world. Included are also detailed write ups and rules for the non-human sentient races, including the rules for non-human player characters. Many of the common fantasy tropes and stereotypes are simultaneously ignored, while brought more down to earth and grounded into the internal consistency of the world. Elves are more closely related to plants than animals, etc, etc. There are very few "generic" villains to be found, and every group of sentient enemies has their own culture and worldview, leaving players and gms with a plurality of options to use the information to design and build encounters solvable in a myriad of ways. Indispensable for play.
Not just a book of monsters ala certain other game systems. This book has details of plants, cultures and entire races....many of which are provided with rules to play as PC's. It also contains some of the most dangerous bad guys and monsters. One of Rune Quests strengths has always been "Monsters are People Too".
This bestiary contains a lot of detailed information about the flora and fauna of Glorantha and is beautifully presented and illustrated. The only way it could be better would be to have even more pictures, but that's a minor gripe. Overall, a valuable resource.
