Posted by Michael O'Brien on 8th Oct 2019

The review site Reviews from R'lyeh — a "blog dedicated to reviews of RPGs and their supplements, with an emphasis on Call of Cthulhu and other Lovecraftian inspired games" — marked its 1000th review this month with a characteristically comprehensive review of Greg Stafford's masterpiece King Arthur Pendragon

Congratulations to Reviews from R'lyeh reviewer Pookie on such a milestone!

Here's a run down of just some of the many reviews Pookie has made of Chaosium releases in recent years.

Pendragon cover

King Arthur Pendragon
"King Arthur Pendragon is Greg Stafford’s masterpiece and he was right to make such a claim… Not just a masterpiece, but a design classic, a master class in using mechanics to both model its Arthurian genre and to encourage its players to roleplay its knightly character types. Those mechanics are all but peerless, beautifully elegant, but flexible in how they push a Knight to act and his player to roleplay and explore Arthurian Britain not through the player’s eyes, but through those of his Knight. Then there is that setting, brought to life as a labour of love upon the part of the author, ready to be explored and experienced. Put it in your top ten, your top five, or your top three, King Arthur Pendragon is one of the greatest roleplaying games ever published, the perfect combination of mechanics and theme."—Reviews from R’lyeh.

Call of Cthulhu Starter Set
"...the best introduction to Call of Cthulhu and best starter set for any roleplaying game currently available."—Reviews from R’lyeh.

Alone Against the Flames
"…well written, nicely handling a growing sense of dread and tension… it shows a player how to create an investigator and use the rules without ruining the tension and horror of the story, it showcases the mundane and the Mythos hand-in-hand, and it prepares a player for the horrors to come… —Reviews from R’lyeh.

Call of Cthulhu the Coloring Book

Down Darker Trails
"...a balanced and mature take upon the Old West with some great examples of how to twist it into the Supernatural West"—Reviews from R'lyeh.

Shadows over Stillwater
"Shadows Over Stillwater serves up a campaign, a scenario, a setting, and a seed strong on Old West standards before injecting them with weird horror, bloody violence, and sun-blanched Sanity losses."—Reviews from R’lyeh.

Cold Harvest
"Though a Mythos threat hovers in the background throughout, the true monsters in Cold Harvest: Roleplaying during the Great Purges of Stalin’s Russia may be the player characters themselves. This is a pleasingly atmospheric affair which asks the question, ‘Can monsters make moral choices in an immoral system?’"—Reviews from R’lyeh.

Call of Cthulhu the Coloring Book
"...the artwork is fantastic, it does illustrate the Mythos, and it acknowledges the contribution of the Call of Cthulhu RPG to the Mythos and thus to horror. Whether you are merely going to look at it, splash colour over it, or use it as a visual aid, the Call of Cthulhu – The Coloring Book delightfully combines whimsical nostalgic format with cosmic horror—and that is as weird a combination as you might ever hope for." - Reviews from Rl'yeh.

HPL Beginning

H.P.Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu for Beginning Readers
"Although cartoon-like, this art never shies away from portraying the horror described in the text. Neither is explicit or overbearing, but the combination is moody and effective at showing and suggesting something beyond our understanding. Perfect then for depicting a short story that is all H.P. Lovecraft even in a new form."—Reviews from Rl’yeh.

RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha
"The definitive set of mechanics for playing RuneQuest and using its Runes to explore both the myths and world of Glorantha during the Hero Wars."—Reviews from R'lyeh.

RQG Gamemaster Screen Pack
"…sets a benchmark by which every other Game Master Screen and support pack will be measured"—Reviews from R’lyeh.

RQG Glorantha Bestiary
"The RuneQuest: Glorantha Bestiary opens up the world of Glorantha and Dragon Pass... Its combination of background and stats, friends and foes, supports Game Master and player alike and together serve to make (it) an essential companion to RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha."—Reviews from R’lyeh.

Apple Lane
"...an excellent introduction to roleplaying in Glorantha in 1978 and like any good classic, it remains still very playable today."—Reviews from R'lyeh.

Peaceful Cruise Misk R

Cults of Prax
"Arguably the most important supplement ever for both Glorantha and RuneQuest."—Reviews from R’lyeh.

The Sea Cave (in RuneQuest Old School ResourcePack)
"An unpublished gem"Reviews from Rl’yeh

The Complete Griselda
"...the twenty-nine stories in The Complete Griselda are most enjoyable, and they do bring the exploits and tales of the ne’er-do-wells and miscreants who frequent Loud Lilina’s and—occasionally Rowdy Djoh Lo’s—to life in a highly entertaining and singular fashion. The Complete Griselda is rife with great characters, fun plots, and the type of situations in which player characters all too find themselves, but most all it is full of damned good stories."—Reviews from R'lyeh.

Miskatonic Monday
We are delighted Pookie has been regularly reviewing creations in the Miskatonic Repository, our Call of Cthulhu community content program on DriveThruRPG. We really appreciate Pookie's support here - as new and up-and-coming creators it means a lot to the writers to see their work featured in a well-regarded blog like Reviews from R'lyeh.
