Great quality, best TTRPG book(s) purchase!

Posted by Celeste on 24th Jun 2023

I've bought from Mutants and Masterminds and D&D books many times, but I've never found higher quality than Call of Cthulhu! It's not just that they want to sell, I feel like they have a serious passion for the game? The books are well organized and easy to follow, the pictures and examples provided are lovely and helpful, the binding and quality of paper/objects themselves are wonderful. Never a better TTRPG purchase, and I spent a hell of a lot of money on this store so I'm very happy!! 10/10 recommend!! For such a serious set TTRPG, it's very beginner friendly with these books!! The Keepers Rulebook is ALL you need to play, unlike with other TTRPGs I'm experienced in. The investigators handbook is ABSOLUTELY worth the purchase for advanced customization, and the keepers screen and the extra maps and booklet that comes with are lovely additions and add depth to the purchase that I love!! Extra and final note: I have bad sensory issues with paper, which is awful because I love reading. The paper of these books it's dry, it's than nice slick kind that's plastic-y!!

    Pricey But Worth It

Posted by Katosepe on 16th May 2023

The price of admission is high here but if you can shell out for it, this is a fantastic starting package for Call of Cthulhu. The slipcase and the two books are gorgeous with great artwork and well made hardcover books. The two included page ribbons are a nice touch. The screen pack is woefully undersold by calling it that. The Keeper Screen is great but the real highlight here are the two included adventures with printed handouts and some great maps you can use for any adventure in Arkham. Overall, this is everything you'd want this pack to be.

    Wonderful set, 10/10

Posted by Brian Sandall on 10th Oct 2022

This is my first foray into Call of Cthulhu, and this set is both beautiful and inspiring. I love the inclusion of so many adventure scenarios to get us into the mood and rhythm of CoC which, as you may know, is quite different from more heroic fantasy type RPGs. The ordering process was seamless, shipping went smoothly, and the packaging was excellent. The people at Chaosium clearly know the pain of receiving a book that has been damaged en route and have taken pains to ensure that doesn't happen. Two thumbs up. The books themselves are solid, well-made, and will likely last many many years of use. There are of course a few typos and minor grammatical errors (usually a missing word such as 'to') here and there, but those are surprisingly few given the amount of content involved. Props to your editor(s), Chaosium. I do have a few very minor nitpicks, but these are the full extent of my criticisms, all of which are either easily remedied or completely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things: - The Experienced Investigators optional rule appears only in the Investigator Handbook, and feels like something that should either be in the Keeper Rulebook instead or at least elaborated on there, for example when and why the Keeper might allow this and guidelines on designing your own skill packages. - Chase rules example on p148 of the Keeper's Rulebook mentions bonus and penalty die might be given to the Speed Rolls, but I can find no mention of this in the actual rules. It most likely refers to a rule that was later cut, or perhaps it's simply referring to how bonus and penalty dice can be used generally to modify situations. - The firearms charts would benefit from indicating which types of ammunition can be used; this information is noted in the Investigator's Handbook under individual firearm entries, but is not in the Keeper Rulebook at all. Of course, most can be extrapolated or easily searched online, but still would be nice to have for ease of reference. - Not all ammunition types are listed for purchase, for example the .303 rounds used by the Lee-Enfield do not appear anywhere and .30 Carbine rounds are only listed under Modern despite the .30 Lever-Action Carbine being listed as available in the 1920s. All in all, 10/10 would purchase again and recommend to anyone looking to start running Call of Cthulhu for their friends.

For those who want to stay

Posted by Dennis Twardy on 30th Sep 2021

Basically: if you know you want to stay with Call of Cthulhu, just buy this slipcase set. There's no need to talk about the Keeper Rulebook - you'll want this sooner or later. The Quickstart rules are fine to test the system out, but you will want this rather sooner than later. While the Investigator's Handbook isn't necessary, it gives Keepers and Investigators more flexibility and a wider variety of occupations - it's a useful addition. The Keeper Screen, well, it's okay, personally, I would have designed the backside differently, but it's still useful. That being set, it's worth it even if it was just for the included scenarios. The slipcase looks nice, keeps everything together and to be honest: why pay basically the same (well, 14cents less) and miss out on the slipcase?

    High Quality

Posted by Mathew Lee on 24th Jan 2021

This slipcase set is fantastic. The books are beautiful, and made with such high quality. I have only read parts of it, and I am yet to run my first adventure with it, but the content is fantastic, and the artwork is immensely inspiring. I got the PDF's for free as well, which is a nice bonus. I got it shipped to Brisbane, Australia, and it only took a couple of weeks. Would 100% recommend.

Beautiful slipcase, gorgeous books, excellent rules (best version of CoC to date). Particularly LOVE the Keeper Screen add-ons, especially the Reference Notes for common/important rules.

    7th Edition Slipcase

Posted by Chris Doar on 17th Oct 2020

I recently bought this as have been playing the 5th edition for years. Arrived well packaged and reassuringly heavy. The slipcase is a thing of beauty, like an artwork but feels durable for regular use. Happy customer and would highly recommend
