What The Critics Say

2017 ENnie winner - Coloring Book for Best RPG Related Product

  • "...the artwork is fantastic, it does illustrate the Mythos, and it acknowledges the contribution of the Call of Cthulhu RPG to the Mythos and thus to horror. Whether you are merely going to look at it, splash colour over it, or use it as a visual aid, the Call of Cthulhu – The Coloring Book delightfully combines whimsical nostalgic format with cosmic horror—and that is as weird a combination as you might ever hope for."

    — Reviews from Rl'yeh, Coloring Cthulhu.

  • "The illustrations in this book are GORGEOUS. Artist Andrey Fetisov has done an outstanding job bringing these stories to life in ways that are legitimately fun to colour... Would I recommend it: Hell yes."

    — Made It My Damn Self, Color the Great Old Ones.

  • "I’m a sucker for good lineweight, so I was totally charmed by the artwork in this book–nice, clean, intentional-looking lines with great variation in width. The illustrations looked like they were actually made for this book and not just hastily traced from previously-made images, like you’d find in a lot of the coloring books in circulation now... The images themselves are absolutely amazing... if you are either a meticulous colorer or love challenges, and have been yearning for some good horror/monster art to enjoy, this book will be right up your alley."

    — Mad Scientist Journal, Coloring Book Review.

  • "The pictures in this book are brought to life with striking and vivid detail. Each tells a story within itself, but it also complements the source material to a striking degree."

    — Shattered Ravings, Adult Coloring Book Review.

  • "Artist Andrey Fetisov illustrates the madness-inducing horror of some of H.P. Lovecraft’s best stories, including "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath", "The Dunwich Horror", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", and (of course) "The Call of Cthulhu." Just look at those colors! As vivid as our nightmares."

    — Tor.com, Lovecraft Art.

  • "I still can't believe that a product like Call of Cthulhu The Coloring Book actually exists. Yet, not only it does, but it wins awards too. It's magnificent; it's mesmerizing; it's complex; it's engaging; it's deeply rewarding. Irrespective of whether you buy it for yourself or for a younger target group, it's money well spent."

    Great presentation, misleading tagline

I'm a fan of adult coloring books. I find the pastime relaxing and entertaining. It's particularly enjoyable when I find a title that relates to one of my interests. The Call of Cthulhu Coloring Book obviously fit the bill nicely. The artwork is very good, providing loads of detail and the opportunity to be creative with your coloring. The only thing that I found a let-down was the amount of content. The book is laid out with a full to the borders page to colour, preceded by a page with a relevant quote relating to the subject of the art, and a smaller 'vignette' art piece, which covers anything from a quarter to half of the quote page. what that actually means is you get 14 full pages coloring pages, and 14 vignette pieces (total of 28). That's what it says on the cover, but the inference is 28 full pages to color. As I mentioned earlier, the content is extremely good, no qualms there. Chaosium's generous inclusion of the PDF version for free with the physical book is a nice touch too. The price (including postage) for the physical book (PDF inclusive) came out to about $30 Aus. That's a lot for a fairly slim book with slimmer content. Chaosium is certainly not responsible for the volatile nature of our currency equivalencies, so perhaps this highlights the ever increasing expense that is a fundamental part of fandom. Final verdict: Content: 4 out of 5 tentacles Value for Money (overseas purchase): 2 out of 5 tentacles
