Herbert West

THE CARD

Special Effect Box: When played, choose any Ally Buried in your Story Deck and slip it beneath this card Add their card values, and both function as one Ally card. This medical student and one Ally of your choice are excluded when determining the results of an Epidemic.

THE SOURCE

Of Herbert West, who was my friend in college, and in after life, I can speak only with extreme terror.- Herbert West - Reanimator, H. P. Lovecraft

CLARIFICATIONS

If you have no buried Allies, you may not play Herbert West.

When you choose the buried Ally, it is re-played from your Story Deck. You need not be in the Dimension, Region, or Subregion of the buried Ally to re-play it; the Special Effect of Herbert West allows you to ignore these constraints. If there is a Sanity change for re-playing the Ally, you must gain or lose Sanity.

The revived Ally and Herbert West are treated as if they were a single Ally card with one set of attributes, one Special Effect, etc. The titles are not combined into one large title, however. You may use the either title to compleat an Adventure. If the combined Ally is buried or discarded, both cards are buried or discarded.

QUESTIONS

Q: When an Ally is brought back by Herbert West, does it still have all of its attributes and abilities?

A: Yes. The two cards now count as one Ally with the combined attributes and abilities of both cards. Remember that if the Ally brought back costs Sanity, it must be paid again. Mythos FAQ

Q:When Herbert West revives an Ally, does that Ally count as in play? If Herbert West revives a steadfast ally is there a corrupt and a steadfast ally in play for Adventure cards? What if the Adventure card required a named ally who was joined with Herbert West?

A: Yes, the Ally is in play. You may use any of the Attributes of the revived Ally card except for the Corrupt/Steadfast toggle. On page 22 of the New Æon rules: the two attributes are opposite--you can never have both on one Ally, and nothing in West's Special Effect overrides this. Herbert West remains Corrupt even if his revived pal would have been Steadfast. You can definitely use the revived Ally's name for the purpose of playing Adventures. Mythos Digest 1:10; Mythos Digest 1:38

Q: Using the special effect of Herbert West I have revived Dr. Allen Halsey. Then I play The Great Epidemic. May I use Herbert West for the Herbert West requirement and Dr. Allen Halsey for the first doctor requirement?

A: No. The two cards are treated as a single Ally. Once you the combined Herbert West + Dr. Allen Halsey Ally card to fulfill one requirement, you may not use the title or attributes of the combined Ally card to fulfill a different requirement.

Q: If I play Herbert West to revive an Ally, can I later play another copy of the same Ally from my hand?

A: No. The Ally revived by Herbert West is in play; its title is available for completion of adventures; you may have only 1 copy of an Ally in play at a time (p. 47 of the New Æon rules) unless another card has altered that rule (for example, Cloning Chamber).

Q: If I have an Ally in play and a copy of the same Ally is all I have in my Story Deck what happens if I play Herbert West?

A: You must wait to play Herbert West until you can choose an Ally from your Story Deck.

Q: If Herbert West is buried in my Story Deck and I cast Resurrection to replay him, do I get to choose a new Ally according to the special effect of Herbert West?

A: Yes. You must use the special effect. If you cannot choose another Ally, you cannot bring Herbert West back into play.

Q: If I play of Herbert West to revive Abigail Marsh, may I give Herbert West one Weapon and Abigail Marsh a different Weapon? Does the value of the combined Ally increase by the Special Effect of Abigail Marsh?

A: No. Each Ally may have only 1 Weapon (page 25 of the New Æ rules) and the combination of Herbert West + Abigail Marsh counts as one Ally Card. Yes, the Special Effect of Abigail Marsh increases the value of the combined Herbert West + Abigail Marsh Ally.

Q: Does this mean that if Herbert West raised Albert Shiny, you couldn't place any weapons on him/it/them?

A: That's correct. The Herbert West + Albert Shiny combination cannot be given a weapon.

Q: If I use Herbert West to re-play Wilbur Whateley from my Story Deck, can I use Wilbur Whateley to bury another player's tome? After I bury Wilbur Whateley can I choose another Ally from my Story Deck?

A: You may use the Special Effect of Wilbur Whateley, but you must bury both Herbert West & Wilbur Whateley, as both cards are treated as a single Ally. Once Herbert West is buried, you cannot use its Special Effect. If the revived Ally's Special Effect may be used only if it is buried or discarded (for example: Randolph Carter [Dreamlands Edition] must be buried to play King of Ilek-Vad or Tukor) may be buried to play a Tome, then Herbert West, too, must be buried or discarded.

Q: If I use Herbert West to re-play Lin Carter, when I use the Special Effect of Lin Cater, (Flip this card face down, and draw a new card from the top of your Mythos Deck), must I also flip Herbert West face-down?

A: Yes. If the use of the revived Ally's Special Effect requires it be flipped (for example: Cat Chieftan or Ghost Being of Ib or Howard Lovecraft [Dreamlands Edition]), then both cards are flipped face-down

Q:The revived ally should be a Living Dead, shouldn't it? Does it count as such for Adventure requirements?

A: Should? Probably. Is? No. What's really important is what's on the card, which may not always quite mesh with Lovecraft's reality. Such is life. Mythos Digest 1:11

Q: Does using Herbert West's Special Effect count as a Resurrection for purposes of Adventures such as Seeking Everlasting Life 2.

A: No.

Q: Do the M.U.-Students (Herbert West) and the M.U.-Professors (Henry Armitage et. al.) also qualify as simple Students or Professors for fullfilling adventures?

A: Yes. They have the Student/Professor attributes. Mythos Digest 1:71

Q: If I need Herbert West for The Great Epidemic and one of my opponents has Herbert West as an Ally in play, may I Dominate him and use my converted Ally for completing The Great Epidemic?

A: Yes. Just figure you're copying the whole card. Use of Dominate does not count as playing this card, so you cannot use the Special Effect of your new Herbert West ally. Mythos Digest 1:198

Q: May I play Herbert West at the J. Edgar Hoover Building which has the special effect of Use this Gate and lose 1 Sanity Point to play any one Corrupt Cultist from any Dimension?

A: No. Herbert West is not a Corrupt Cultist.

Q: When Rhan-Tegoth is in play, if Herbert West and a revived Ally are buried then re-resurrected by the special effect of Rhan-Tegoth, are the cards separated? Can I then use the special effect of Herbert West to play another Ally from my Story Deck?

A: No and no. The cards are not buried, not separated, and you may not choose to replay a different Ally from your Story Deck. Even if the cards were separated, you would not be able to use Herbert West's special effect: Rhan-Tegoth's special effect does not count as When played.....

STRATEGIES

Me & My Bodyguard... the undead! While Herbert West is required for The Great Epidemic, he may be used in any deck, and is a good addition to any deck that visits Arkham. Build a deck around adventures that require a lot of Allies (for example: Heroic Rescue). Use Herbert West to replay useful Allies, or any Ally buried in your Story Deck that that would otherwise be shuffled into your Mythos Deck. When Herbert West is buried, bring him back and re-use his Special Effect by casting Resurrection or Consume Likeness.

In My Laboratory, I am Invulnerable Use Flee to Special Room to protect Herbert West.

Need a Hand? Herbert West + a revived three-point Ally makes for a formidable defending Ally.

Are You Sure It's Human? Move Herbert West and his revived Ally to the Threat, by placing an Enchanted Weapon in their hands, or by casting Become Spectral Hunter on them.
